Stories of Courage & Resilience:
Tendulkar Yuan

Service Professional: Tendulkar Yuan
Department: Bell Desk

Two important words guide the way we remember Hurricane Melissa.

Time and place.

Time dragged on as we waited. Every update brought another delay. Another shift in track. Another long night waiting for what would become one of the most devastating days in our country’s modern history.

Place held its breath.

We have known storms in Jamaica. We have known seasons of calm. We have known the gift of distance between the hurricanes we endure. We have been grateful for that grace.

Then came Melissa.

And in that moment, time and place came together for Tendulkar Yuan.

He was at home preparing, thinking the calm before the storm would last. Monday, the winds had become something else. The stairwells were taking on water. The upstairs was flooding. Roof drains blocked by leaves and branches sent water rushing through window seals and under doors.

He mopped for hours.

He tried to clear drains in winds strong enough to tear the plastic raincoat from his face.

He watched zinc sheets and water tanks fly through the air.

He lost furniture and clothes. His car was damaged. He suffered a painful breakout from the contaminated water. And like so many of our team, he lived through the fear of watching his home give way to the storm.

Yet when Tendulkar speaks, he speaks with gratitude.

“I am happy I am still here. I am happy I am alive. I know people went through worse, but it was bad for everybody. And the support from Half Moon means a lot. We stand together as a family.”

Time and place have shaped his journey in another way.

Before the hurricane, Tendulkar worked at the Bell Desk. Today, as we rebuild, he serves in every way he can. He helps with the cleanup beside his colleagues and takes photos as he moves across the property.

He photographs the hands that lift debris, the feet that steady the ground, the faces filled with quiet resolve. He captures the small acts of care that hold this community together as we bring Half Moon back to life.

His images remind us of who we are:
A family.
A community.
A place held together by people who show up for one another.
