David Leadbetter

WORLD RENOWNED GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Originally from Worthing in Sussex, England, David began his career in golf on European and South African tours. He soon realized his interest was in the technique, mechanics, and intricacies of the game, which eventually led him to spend more time teaching than playing.

Soon after retirement from playing, he began to incorporate his methods and philosophies into a stringent, holistic training program for qualified instructors that remains unmatched even today. Since launching the first Leadbetter Golf Academy more than 30 years ago, David has coached players to more than a dozen Major Championship titles and over 100 individual worldwide tournament victories.

Four of those players have even held first place in the Official World Golf Ranking. With a desire to bring the same world-class instruction to players of all ages and abilities, and in addition to the numerous articles written for publications like Golf Digest and Golf International over the past three decades, David has authored seven books on the topic.

Ryan and Rayne Russell

Ryan and Rayne Russell

TENNIS COACHES & DIRECTORS of
RUSSELL TENNIS ACADEMY

The Russell family's tennis legacy is woven into the very fabric of Half Moon's history. Richard Russell, Half Moon's inaugural tennis professional and a Jamaican sporting icon, instilled his passion for the sport in his sons, Ryan and Rayne.

A distinguished player, Richard made waves on the international stage by competing and triumphing at all Grand Slam championships from 1964 to 1972. With over 12 victories in the Davis Cup, including notable wins against tennis luminaries like Arthur Ashe and Charles Passarel, Richard's prowess on the court was undeniable.

As a founding member of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), Richard's influence extended far beyond his playing days. He honed his expertise while working with tennis legends such as Harry Hopman, Don Budge, and Pacho Segura. From 1972 to 1995, Richard served as the director of tennis at Half Moon, contributing greatly to the resort’s tennis program over the years.

Today, Richard continues to champion tennis within Jamaica's vibrant sporting community. Together with two of his sons, Ryan and Rayne, he co-directs the Russell Tennis Academy. Ryan, once ranked as the highest-rated ITF Junior in the world at just 15 years old, boasts an impressive record of over 20 singles victories in the Davis Cup. Meanwhile, Rayne, a former top-ranked Jamaican and Caribbean ITF junior player, has also represented Jamaica in the Davis Cup and competed in the Australian Open Junior Championships.

Tanya Vassell

Director, fern tree, a salamander spa

Having learned the beneficial effects of pressure point massage from her grandfather, Tanya started sharing this learned gift, relieving co-workers and passengers on Air Jamaica of headaches and sinus pressures, where she was a flight attendant for 7 years. She further enhanced her sense of touch through Swedish and Japanese therapeutic massage and aesthetic studies pursued in Florida.

One of her most interesting assignments was getting involved with the development of the Milk River Bath in Clarendon, Jamaica, a natural spa with healing waters rich in nutrients. Analysis of the mineral spring there has established that it is more radioactive than leading European spas, (fifty-four times as active as Baden in Switzerland and three times as active as Karlsbad, Austria). The waters are reputed to cure numerous ailments including rheumatism, gout, neuralgia, sciatica, lumbago, nerve conditions and liver disorders. Milk River was willed to the people of Jamaica and remains a National Heritage Site.

Tanya leads a team of wellness professionals, second to none, who through their personal development form the basis of the wellness movement at Half Moon. Tanya’s success in developing individuals within the Spa Industry in the Caribbean as well as her role in creating national standards for Spa operations has been widely recognized and touted.
