For over fifty years, Half Moon has taken enormous pride in consistently exceeding guests' expectations by providing exceptional service and by continuously recognizing our own staff and their individual efforts in this endeavor.
In striving to maintain our reputation as one of the finest resorts in the Caribbean, we hold as our motto, "With quality in mind, do it right every time."
Each month, individual Half Moon employees are recognized for their outstanding efforts with the Half Moon Shining Stars programme. Guests are encouraged to fill out our brief employee recognition cards when they have had an exceptional experience with one of our employees.
Here are this month's Half Moon "Shining Stars."
History
In 1954, a group of wealthy individuals including Donald Deskey, designer of Radio City Music Hall; Harvey Firestone, Jr. of The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company; Richard Reynolds of the Reynolds Metal Company and Jamaican Bauxite Company; oil and real estate entrepreneur Curtis Steuart and Mrs. Laurence Armour of U.S. meat packaging giant Armour Packing Company, chose to build an exclusive vacation resort on a perfectly shaped crescent beach, that they aptly named "Half Moon." That same year Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club officially opened with seventeen whitewashed cottages overlooking Half Moon Bay, and 30 beachfront homes.
As it still does, the Resort attracted many luminaries of the day including Joan Crawford and her husband Alfred Steel (CEO of Pepsi-Cola), Clark Gable and HRH Princess Margaret. Other notable guests include HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and HRH the Prince of Wales; John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy, Prince Rainer of Monaco; and George H. W. Bush, when he was Vice President.
Although the cottages were passed down from generation to generation, three descendants of the original investors, Curtis Steuart, Bill Weiss Sr., and Howard Pearce have shaped the property into what it is today, the Caribbean's most complete resort.
Over the years, Half Moon has undergone several renovations and additions, most recently, the multi-million dollar demolition and rebuilding of its 50-year-old beachfront rooms. Today, Half Moon stretches across 400 lushly landscaped acres, with 34 stately three- to seven-bedroom villas, each with its own personal staff and pool, 152 luxurious suites and 46 breathtaking rooms. Eleven of the original cottages remain today, a tribute to the legacy of the founders, whose descendants remain as resort shareholders.
Half Moon features a championship, 72-par Robert Trent Jones, Sr. golf course, 18-hole putting green, 13-lit tennis courts, a full range of water sports, an exclusive natural Dolphin Lagoon, six gourmet restaurants and over half a dozen informal snack bars, a world class spa and shopping village.
